The New World

Just a little information on the world Pawn takes place in…

(TO BE UPDATED MORE)

Society…

  • Pawn’s society is split into two major groups: Demons and Humans.

- D e m o n s -

  • Demons, despite their label, are as human as any other individual on the planet. However, demons possess several attributes that separate them from normal humans. As a result of inherited mutations, they gained distinct features:
  1. They are all born with red eyes
  2. They have more frequent and more drastic growth sperts, growing as much as six to eight feet tall.
  3. Their bodies are very quick to fix wounds. Something as small as a papercut to as much as a gash from a sword can vanish within the day. The larger the wound, the longer it takes to repair. Also, the younger the individual, the slower the wound will heal.
  4. Their immune systems are very weak. Illness as harmless as a cold can spell death for them. The younger the individual, the stronger their immune system.
  • As a result of these attributes, many assumed that they were children of the devil (hence giving birth to the label: demon) and they were frequently persecuted, burned, and exiled. However, a sum of years preceding the start of the story, scientists were able to discover that demons were indeed humans with genetic defects. As a result of this discovery, the prejudice toward demons was greatly deminished, however, many still refuse to associate with them. Despite the problems their outwad appearance has brought them, inwardly, their defects took a much greater toll. Demons’ immune systems are extremely fragile and an illness as small as a fever could spell death for them. Because of this, demons seldom live to see age fifty but have grown to sixty and the oldest having been eighty-one.

  • Humans are just your average people. Nothing particularly special to mention about them that you wouldn’t already know. They have the majority of control in the world and generally do not mingle with demons, but more recent generations are more tolerant of them.

Where…?

  • The story takes place on earth, but more precisely an alternate earth. It takes place in an Elizabethan setting, and I believe it would take place during the 1800′s, however, even I am not sure of the exact time. It is slightly more technologically advanced for its time while being much more primitive than modern technology.
  • Geographically, the planet is the same and the story focuses around three countries in particular: England, France, and Ireland. England is the country particularly reserved for first class individuals, nobles, and humans. France consists mostly of demons and is associated with the second-class. Ireland is an even mix of humans and demons and is extremely tolerant of demons, however, it is often associated with the third-class. Even more tragically, Ireland once again suffers a terrible famine (in contrast to the Great Famine which occured in the late 1800′s). Sorry fans of Ireland O_O I don’t mean to beat up Ireland. In fact, aside from the horrible famine and sometimes bad reputation, I treat Ireland with care ^___^ My favorite characters come from Ireland :D

Estate…

Estate is almost synonymous with currency in this world. Here estate is any amount of land represented by a piece of paper. The more land the paper represents, the more money it is worth (obviously).

- H u m a n s -

  • As far as gaining estate goes for humans, it is a system of friends with benefits. If you lack connections with nobles (nobles being those with strong lineage and abundant with estate) you most likely will not have a future in gaining estate and instead must rely on currency gained through what jobs you can obtain. In the business of gaining estate, the majority of humans formulate their own groups to gather estate for themselves and keep estate within their circle. Small groups are more common as opposed to large ones.

- D e m o n s -

  • Demon’s lack the distinct groups humans form and instead operate as one large group with one leader distrubuting estate to those who are most eligible and will be able to do the most with it. To assist in the descision of who receives estate, a demon must have a sponsor to speak positively of them. The more rich the sponsor, the more likely the demon is to receive estate from the council. Lineage and nobility are also very important in demon society and, without a good bloodline standing behind you, you will have to rely on whatever job you can find.

Occupations…

Occupations between demon and human society vary slightly

- H u m a n s -

  • Jobs are reserved for the poor. Few, if any, nobles have an occupation aside from trading estate. Having a job is looked down upon as it shows that you need to get money through labor in order to survive

- D e m o n s -

  • Jobs are more common amongst demons, however, having a job is in most cases looked down upon. One specific case of a noble job is a maid. Maids (and similar occupations) are reserved for nobles because of the philosophy that the poor would have no idea how to clean a large home, the poor should not be touching valuables, and there is a risk the poor will steal from the place of work to make a profit for themselves.
